High added value for presenting travel destinations

3D surveying is not only used for precise as-built documentation. The multifunctional evaluation of the scan data also offers high added value for presenting travel destinations. The Protestant parish of St. Marien took this innovative path when it commissioned laser-scanning-architecture to survey its Gothic hall church in 3D.

The St. Marienkirche is located in the historic centre of Osnabrück. It is a jewel of architectural history and attracts tourists from all over the world. As the old church guide was outdated and could not come close to conveying the beauty of the building, the church council looked for new solutions for an appealing, forward-looking presentation.

Architect Johannes Rechenbach then explained the advantages of the 3D scan data model to the parish.

This proved decisive in creating a multimedia documentation of the church, which is now available as a data DVD with brochure for just € 5.00 from the parish office.

The data model generated once during 3D scanning enables a wide range of analyses of great benefit not only for building documentation but also for marketing purposes.

Benefits for marketing purposes

Colour photo panoramas

Interactive colour photo panoramas present the historic hall church online or on the DVD enclosed with the church guide. A virtual visit is thus possible at any time and from far away.

Exciting visualisations

Exciting visualisations show the church from a side no visitor has ever seen before. Areas inaccessible to tourists, such as the roof truss with the vaulted ceilings that can be walked on from above, are also documented in this way.

Editable video animations

Freely editable video animations with flights through the church interior and even through walls could only be produced by a professional film crew at very great expense – from the scan data this is quick and straightforward.

Accurate as-built plans

Accurate as-built plans of the current building fabric can be produced and serve as a valuable working basis for upcoming refurbishments. Sections, elevations and floor plans at any point in the church can be extracted from the 3D model.

Damage mapping

Detailed damage mapping and deformation-accurate analysis of the building fabric are feasible with the 3D scans. For example, the ambulatory contains tombstone slabs set into the floor, which are exposed to daily wear. The current condition of the inscriptions on these slabs is now archived for future generations.

Video animations and images

Video animations: Experience in this video the innovative potential contained in the scan data: you are guaranteed never to have seen a building like this before.
